Environmentalists concerned over pipeline

MICHIGAN CITY – Save the Dunes and eight other environmental groups have signed a letter to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management expressing concern over the impact of Enbridge Energy’s planned pipeline.

The pipeline would carry 500,000 barrels per day of tar sands through the region. Executive Director Nicole Barker of Save the Dunes said the concern is over Enbridge’s safety record.

In 2010, a pipeline leak spilled 1.1 million gallons of tar sands into 34 miles of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. In addition, the company has been cited for 500 environment violations in Wisconsin, including a 50,000 gallon oil spill there in July.
