WHITING – BP has reached an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several environmental groups to pay $420 million in fines and addition pollution control and monitoring equipment.

The additional equipment will be used to monitor the processing of tar sands that will soon be refined at BP’s Whiting Refinery. It also put air monitors in place that will help illuminate a broader understanding of emissions from refiners processing heavy oil.

“Tar sands are a nasty source of oil that threatens our climate and also emits dangerous pollution into the communities where it is refined,” said Ann Alexander of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Also involved in the challenge was the Sierra Club, Hoosier Environmental Council and Save the Dunes.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement that protects jobs, consumers and the environment,” said Steve Cornel, president of BP Products North America.
