AM General lays off 400 employees

MISHAWAKA – AM General, which manufactures the military HUMVEE, has laid off 400 employees. The workers, who had just returned to week following a two-month layoff, will be out of work until at least March.

The layoffs were attributed to a changing business climate due to delays in the awarding of a new Defense Department contract for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. That vehicle will replace the HUMVEE.

Work on that new vehicle is expected to begin at the AM General plant sometime in 2013.

Following the layoff, AM General will still have 1,000 employees in St. Joseph County.
