MUNSTER – Red squared off against blue as the Munster Police and Fire departments took to the ball field and played in a charitable softball game to benefit the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster.

The Resource Centre is a program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care in northwest Indiana and the south Chicago suburbs. All services of the Cancer Resource Centre – support groups, mind-body-spirit classes, educational offerings and a resource library – are offered free of charge to those in need.

Officer James Ghrist, Choice Community Council came up with the idea and because it was created as a local event, wanted to be able to designate the proceeds to a local non-profit.

“We all know lots of people touched by cancer,” Ghrist said, “and found a way to make a difference in our own community. Our first game was very successful – we sold more than 300 tickets and combined with the proceeds of the 50/50 raffle, were able to present a check for more than $1,600 to the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster.”
