Unemployment rates rose slightly in some of northern Indiana’s metro areas in May when compared to April.
The state’s jobless rate in May was 4%, up slightly from 3.9% in April, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
In the Gary metro area, the May jobless rate was 7.3%, up from 6.8% in April. The Gary area’s jobless rate in May 2020 was 15.6%, which was about the time many businesses were scaling back operations because of the global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Elkhart-Goshen area also saw its jobless rate rise in May. That region’s rate of 3.2% was up from 3% in April but down from 11.4% in May 2020.
The Michigan City-La Porte area jobless rate in May was 6.2%, up from 6.1% in April and down from 15.2% in May 2020.
In the South Bend-Mishawaka area, the jobless rate in May was 5%, up from 4.8% in April and down from 13.3% in May 2020.
