IU Health LaPorte presents 41 scholarships

LAPORTE – Indiana University Health LaPorte, the LaPorte Hospital Foundation and the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary, has announced 2011 scholarship awards.

The organizations have been offering scholarship to students pursuing healthcare careers since 1983. This year, 41 scholarships totaling $128,750 were presented.

The LaPorte Hospital Foundation Kepler Award goes to a student studying to be a physician who will return as a member of the medical staff of IU Health LaPorte Hospital. Recipients were Abigail Prast, a student at A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Rachel Rehlander, a student at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The Rumely Award is a memorial to A.J. and Frances Rumely, community and healthcare leaders in LaPorte. The recipient was Michelle Price, a nursing student at Ball State University.

The Kemp Family Scholarship is in memory of Gladys Kemp, a retired nurse. The recipient is Danielle Combs, a nursing student at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond.

The Elizabeth and Eugene Siefker Scholarship recipient is Michael Goetz, a student at St. Joseph’s College where he is studying biology and chemistry.

The Richard M. Sisson Scholarship recipient is Cheryl Barney, a nursing student at Ancilla College.

The LaPorte Hospital Foundation Magnuson Scholarship honors Dr. John E. and Lillian R. Magnuson. The recipients are Rebecca Herrold, a master of nursing student at St. Xavier University; Kimberly Jelinek, a doctorate of nursing practice student at Valparaiso University; Pamela McNeal-Laue, a master of social work student at Indiana University-South Bend; and Regina Welch, a master of adult education at IUPUI.

The Harold and March Bowen Scholarship is in memory of the long-time hospital volunteers. The recipient is Ashley Henrich, a physical therapy student at IUPUI.

The Door Prairie Paints Scholarship recipient is Andrew Taschler, a pharmacy student at Butler University.

The Friend of Auxiliary Scholarship recipient is Amy Minix, a pharmacy student at Butler University.

The Indiana Health Auxiliaries Association President Scholarship recipient is Nicole Johnson, a biology student at Indiana University.

First Year Auxiliary Scholarships were presented to Jenna Burke, nursing, St. Francis; Madison Chartier, pharmacy, Butler University; Lauren Jernas, pharmacy, Purdue University; Christopher Lee, biology, IUPUI; Jessica Menke, nursing, Indiana Wesleyan University; Sarah Mumma, nursing, Purdue University; Lauren Palmer, biomedical engineering, Butler University; Haley Peckat, biology, Indiana University; Nathan Quinlan, physical therapy, Purdue University; and Megan Rogers, nursing, Indiana Wesleyan University.

Second Year Auxiliary Scholarships were given to Andrew Alexander, biology, IUPUI; Toni Jackson, nursing, Purdue North Central; Brina Miltenberger, psychology and chemistry, Hope College; and Kaitlyn Smith, pharmacy, Ferris State University.

The IU Health Physicians Legacy Award was presented to Samantha Armstrong, a first-year student at Indiana University School of Medicine; Aaron Esper, a first-year student at Indiana University School of Medicine; and Tyler Miller, a second-year student at Indiana University School of Medicine.

The IU Health LaPorte Critical Occupations Award/Loan Program award was presented to Laura Beach, nursing, Purdue University Calumet; Bridgett Campbell, nursing, Grand Valley State University; Katherine Fitzgerald, occupational therapy, University of Indianapolis; and Amber Zeedyk, physical therapy, Andrews University.
