GARY – A Fly 4 Life event will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at Miller Beach in Marquette Park.

The event, organized by Karen Hannon, will benefit the National Children’s Cancer Society. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and is $20 for a single flyer and $50 for a family. The fee includes admission, kites, food and entertainment. Virtual flyers can participate online at www.loungelax.com.

Hannon created Lounge N Lax children’s wears, which includes pants and matching caps. The products are a result of her son’s problem with winter perspiration and her daughter’s aversion to having her hair combed. The caps have either a bamboo lining which absorbs moisture or a rayon fabric which helps keep hair in place.

“If I can take a child and make them look better on the outside, it’s going to raise their self-esteem to where they feel a little better on the inside and not be so shy to go out in public,” said Hannon.

The goal is to raise between $5,000 and $10,000. For more information, call (219) 614-4448.

MERRILLVILLE – Author Janice Beier has released her second children’s book, “Zebert the Rainbow Striped Zebra Meets Tilly the Tortoise.” Beier, who lives in Merrillville, will hold readings this summer with the Merrillville parks Department and Good Shepherd Daycare & Preschool in Crown Point.

The book shows how Zebert and his friends help Tilly under her special talents.

“The lesson I want children to take away from the story is that, like Tilly, although we may wish to have the abilities and/or talents that others possess, it is more important to figure out what we can do,” said Beier.
