HAMMOND – A student engineering team from Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation won the grand prize award in the 2018 International “Real Steel” Marketing Video Challenge, sponsored by the Association for Iron and Steel Technology  Foundation.

The team’s captain, Kyle Toth, is a graduate research assistant who received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from PNW in 2016. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree, in addition to serving as president of PNW’s student Material Advantage chapter. John Moreland, CIVS senior research scientist, also was part of the video production team.

The competition challenged students to research the steel industry and produce a three-minute video educating viewers on advanced technologies in steelmaking.

Chenn Zhou, CIVS director, said, “We’re very proud to have our CIVS team recognized on such a prestigious stage for their effort, which we also feel reflects on the quality and approach our CIVS teams bring to projects across the board.”

The CVIS team’s winning video was shown at AISTech 2018, the steel industry’s premiere international technology conference and exposition in Philadelphia in May. More than 7,000 industry leaders and technical professionals attended the three-day event. In addition, Toth was accepted into the graduate student poster competition.
