VALPARAISO – In spite of difficulties in her own life, Christine Hisick has made it a mission to help others. Hisick, founder of “Banta Feeds Food Drives” and “Hands Around the Square,” has been named an Entrepreneur of the Month by the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana.

Hisick grew up in a foster home and was adopted by her foster parents when she was w years old. She endured name calling because of her bi-racial heritage when she was growing up, but always had a sense of compassion for others.

In 2008, she lost her job, but said others had it worse than she did. In February 2009, she launched “Banta Feeds Food Drives” in an effort to rally 14 communities in Porter County to boost donations to local food pantries.

Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas allowed for a collection bin at City Hall.

Later that year, in response to two racial incidents in the city, she organized “Hands Around the Square” to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion. Over two years, Hisick held two such events, attracting upwards of 250 people.

In 2010, Costas recognized Hisick as one of his heroes and in November, she was named Neighborhood Liaison for Valparaiso. She was nominated for the recognition by Richard Marrell, a 2005 Fellow.
