GRIFFITH and MERRILLVILLE — Nonprofit organizations across Lake, Porter and La Porte counties are participating in the first-ever NWIgives day of giving, scheduled for February 12, 2014. Organized and presented by Lake Area United Way and Legacy Foundation, NWIgives is an innovative online fundraising event that encourages individuals to donate as much money as possible in support of their favorite participating Northwest Indiana charities in just 24 hours.

“We are thrilled to partner with Legacy Foundation, the United Ways of Porter and La Porte counties, Foundations of East Chicago, Unity Foundation of La Porte County, corporate leaders, and nonprofit organizations from throughout the three-county area, to host an event that showcases the collective power of philanthropy in Northwest Indiana,” said Jeremy Miller, chief operating officer of Lake Area United Way. “NWIgives also highlights the important role nonprofits have in enhancing the quality of life in our communities and allows us a chance to work regionally for the betterment of the entire region.”

Beginning at midnight CST February 12 and continuing until 11:59 p.m. CST, people throughout Northwest Indiana can go online to , connect with causes like the South Shore Arts Association, Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Porter-Starke Services and Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, and make tax-deductible donations to support the important work of Northwest Indiana charities. All online donations made on http://NWIgives.razoo.com  through NWIgives will go directly to support the mission of the organizations designated.
