Latest jobless figures show Indiana’s unemployment rate at 3.2 percent

Indiana’s unemployment rate saw a slight increase from April to May.

The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, distributed June 18 by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, shows the state’s jobless rate in May, the latest data available, stood at 3.2 percent, up from 2.9 percent in April. The state’s jobless rate in May 2017 also was 3.2 percent.

Data showed that Indiana’s labor force totaled 3,406,833 in May, with 3,297,563 employed and 109,270 unemployed.

The U.S. jobless rate in May was 3.6 percent, down from 3.7 in April. The nation’s jobless rate was 4.1 percent in May 2017.

Around Indiana, the Gary metropolitan area, which includes most of Northwest Indiana, recorded a jobless rate of 4.2 percent in May, up from April’s mark of 4.1 percent.

May’s unemployment rate for the Michigan City-LaPorte area was 3.9 percent, which was unchanged from April. The South Bend-Mishawaka jobless rate in May was 3.4 percent, up from 3.2 percent in April.
